Where It All Started
Our founding begins with our owner’s upbringing. Phillip Smith was raised by parents who taught him to do the right thing and instilled a love of agriculture and the environment. In Phillip’s own words: “On our small family farm, Dad taught me at an early age to do things right the first time. Mom and Dad also taught my siblings and me to be respectful of people’s property and always do the right thing.”
When Phillip became the head of his own family, he started working at a large pest control firm. There, his parents’ teachings manifested in a passion for the profession. It offered a perfect combination of his love for agriculture and the environment, as well as his deep-seated drive to help people. From this early moment in his career, it was clear that protecting families and businesses from pests, rodents, and wildlife was Phillip's calling.
Compass Pest Management's Growth in South Carolina & Georgia
After obtaining a business administration/marketing degree, Philip opened Compass Pest Management in Greenville, SC, in November of 1995. Remembering his father's words, Philip and his wife, Lisa, agreed it was time to start a pest control firm that emphasized great customer service. This basic principle has taken our company from a one-man operation to an organization with over 30 employees. Learn more about our staff on our Meet the Team page.
Initially, we exclusively offered pest and moisture control services. In 1996, Philip brought his former supervisor and mentor on board to help expand our services to include termite control.
Our growth did not stop there. After building a strong presence in Greenville, SC, we expanded our service area to Cornelia and other parts of Northeast Georgia. We also moved into commercial and industrial pest control and began serving healthcare clinics, hospitals, nursing and assisting living facilities, restaurants, and banks.

Throughout our time in business, we have received many recognitions for our premium services. In 2004, our founder and president, Philip Smith, was named Pest Management Professional of the Year by the South Carolina Pest Control Association. More recently, Compass Pest Management was voted “Best Pest Control Service” by the readers of “The Northeast Georgian."
Where Are We Now?
Today, Compass Pest Management is the pest control firm of choice for tens of thousands in Upstate South Carolina and Northeast Georgia. In addition to providing excellent pest control, we serve our local communities by helping mentor young people, training prison inmates to interview for jobs upon release, and working with Rotary clubs in awarding scholarships to high school students.
